President of Armenia Armen Sarkissian has been hospitalized for a week after he tested positive for COVID-19, the President's office reported on Wednesday.

“The disease still has a complicated course,” the office said in a statement. “President Sarkissian has symptoms typical of that condition, including a fever and double pneumonia.”

The first report on his diagnosis was made on January 5. It stated that the 67-year-old president tested positive and showed symptoms for the coronavirus after he went through a foot surgery in London on January 3.

Sarkissian is a former British citizen who spent nearly three decades of his life in London before becoming Armenia’s largely ceremonial head of state in April 2018.

The presidential press service on January 8 confirmed his return to Armenia “immediately after the stabilization of his condition.”

It is still unclear whether Sarkissian, who has been consistently obeying physical distancing rules during his official engagements, was infected with COVID-19 in Armenia. He traveled to Britain last month and spent New Year’s Eve with his sons and grandchildren in London.

Both Armenia and the United Kingdom have been badly struck by the Covid19. More than 163,000 coronavirus cases and at least 2,951 deaths have been officially confirmed in Armenia among the total 3 million population.
