Iran's president said the next US administration on Sunday should use the opportunity to compensate for the mistakes of President Donald Trump, reported by the Iranian state after the US presidency was captured by Joe Biden.

"The harmful policy of Trump was opposed ... by the American people." Iran's President Hassan Rouhani was quoted as saying that the next US administration should use the opportunity to make up for past errors.

Rouhani said, "Iran favors constructive interaction with the world."

Biden has pledged to rejoin Iran's six-power nuclear deal in 2015, an agreement that Washington agreed upon when he was vice president if Iran also returns to compliance.

Since 2018, when Trump came out of the deal and reimposed sanctions that have crippled Iran's economy, tensions have spiked between the long-time enemies.

Tehran has gradually reduced its commitments to the agreement in retaliation. But the clerical rulers of Iran have said that those steps are reversible if the interests of Tehran are respected.
