The Vice-Chairman of the Samsung company, Lee Jae-Yong bowed on apology on Wednesday for company misconduct including a controversial plan for him to ascend to the leadership of the world’s largest smartphone maker.

Lee Jae-Yong is a vice-chairman of Samsung Electronics. He was jailed for 5 years in 2017 for bribery, embezzlement, and other offenses in connection with the scandal that brought down South Korea President Park Geun-Hye. 51 years old Lee Jae-Yong was released a year later on appeal but is currently undergoing a retrial.

Speaking on a news conference, Lee said, “We are recognized for our top-class technology and products but the public eye towards Samsung is still critical and it is all because of our shortcomings.” He also promised there will be no more controversies over the promotion. “I will never take any action that goes against the law,” he added.

The conference was held on the Samsung Electronics office in Seoul where reporters and authorities sat apart following the social distancing rules.
