India confirmed 41,965 new cases in the last 24 hours on Wednesday morning, bringing the total number of infections to 3,28,10,845 since the epidemic began in January of last year. The number of new cases is up 35.6 percent from Tuesday's total of 30,941 cases.
With 460 deaths, the total number of people killed has risen to 4,39,020. The number of active cases has increased to 3,78,181. So date, a total of 3,19,93,644 people have been cured of the condition.
Meanwhile, according to AFP, the World Health Organization has detected a new strain of the virus known as "Mu." The variant, known technically as B.1.621, was initially detected in Colombia in January and has been categorized as a "variant of interest" by the World Health Organization.
In its weekly pandemic bulletin, the World Health Organization said it was monitoring the variant. “The Mu variant has a constellation of mutations that indicate potential properties of immune escape,” the bulletin said, adding that further studies were needed to better understand the mutation.
