Headshot! World Custard Pie Championships returns with a splat

Dozens of competitors took to Coxheath Village Hall near Maidstone in Kent on Saturday to partake in the annual World Custard Pie Championship.

Teams in fancy costumes who are provided with paper plates of custard pie compete by throwing the pie at each other while staying behind a line and using only their left arm from below the shoulder.

Judges assess which team was best in each heat by awarding six points for a headshot, three for hitting the shoulder, and a point for any other part of the body. The winning team of four receives a trophy at the end of the competition.

The slapstick-inspired tournament has been held in the village since 1967 and attracted teams from near and far, including Japan, although this year's competition had fewer attendees while last year's event was canceled due to the coronavirus pandemic.
