Multiple people were killed and others were injured in a shooting at a Walmart in Virginia, United States, according to police.

Leo Kosinski, a spokesman for the Chesapeake police department, said that officers responded to a report of a shooting at the Walmart on Sam's Circle at 10:15 p.m. local time.

Over 35 to 40 minutes, officers discovered multiple deceased and injured individuals in the store.

He stated that police believe there was one shooter who is now deceased. According to Kosinski, they think that the shooting ceased when the police arrived. He did not have an exact death toll, but stated that it was "less than ten right now."

Kosinski stated that he did not believe police fired shots, but he could not determine whether the shooter committed suicide.

Mike Kafka, a spokesman for Sentara Healthcare, stated via text message that Norfolk General Hospital was treating five Walmart patients. Their condition was unavailable immediately.

It occurred three days after a gunman opened fire at a gay nightclub in Colorado, killing five and injuring 17. This shooter was apprehended after being tackled and beaten by club patrons. A year has passed since a school shooting in Uvalde, Texas, which claimed the lives of 21 people and rocked the nation.

Walmart stated in a statement that it was "shocked" by the incident at its Chesapeake store and was cooperating with law enforcement.

The police were anticipated to hold a press conference in the early morning (US time).

Tuesday's shooting brought to mind a 2019 incident at a Walmart in El Paso in which 22 people were killed by a gunman who, according to police, was targeting Mexicans. That day, Walmart did not have a security guard on duty.

Democratic US Senator Mark Warner tweeted, "Sickened by reports of yet another mass shooting, this time at a Walmart in Chesapeake." State Senator Louise Lucas, a fellow Democrat, tweeted that she was "absolutely heartbroken that the most recent mass shooting in America occurred at a Walmart in my district." I will not rest until we find the answers to end our nation's gun violence epidemic, which has claimed many lives.

Chesapeake is located approximately 320 kilometers southeast of Washington, DC.
