Wednesday, Greek officials rescued 30 migrants whose vessel sank after striking a rocky region in stormy waves near the island of Kythira, the coastguard reported.

Authorities had launched a search-and-rescue mission to save approximately 100 migrants on board the vessel.

So far, thirty people have been rescued. "The operation is ongoing despite the inclement weather," stated a coastguard official. There were strong winds in the area.

The boat carrying the migrants sank after colliding with a rocky location. A coastguard vessel and a helicopter from the Greek navy rushed to the area.

The coastguard provided no additional information regarding potential casualties or the nationalities of the migrants.

Kythira is an island located opposite the southeasternmost point of the Peloponnese peninsula.

In 2015 and 2016, Greece was at the forefront of Europe's migrant crisis, as a million refugees fleeing violence and poverty in Syria, Iraq, and Afghanistan entered primarily via Turkey.

Since then, the number of migrants entering the country has decreased significantly, although attempts to enter the country by water through its islands continue.
