Anthony Fauci, the main medical adviser to the president of the United States, plans to step down before the end of Joe Biden's first term in 2025.

Dr. Fauci told CNN, "By the time we get to the end of [President] Biden's first term, I will very likely [retire],"

He expressed "sure" that he would no longer hold the position after January 2025.

Since 1984, Dr. Fauci has led the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases.

In 2020, he became the public face of the United States' efforts to contain the COVID-19 epidemic.

Dr. Fauci sought security protection for himself and his family due to death threats and harassment when former president Donald Trump stated that the epidemic would "fade away," advocated experimental treatment approaches, and denigrated experts who disagreed with him.

Dr. Fauci stated that his choice to resign had nothing to do with politics.

"It has nothing to do with pressures, nothing to do with all of the other nonsense that you hear about, all the barbs, the slings and the arrows," he stated.

"That has no bearing on me."

Dr. Fauci told Politico that he planned to "leave behind an institution where I have picked the best people in the country, if not the world, who will continue my vision."

The 81-year-old stated that he had no intention of retiring from his current position.

He stated, "I'm going to continue working because I still have a lot of energy and passion about public health, and global public health,"

'We've got to move quickly' on monkeypox, Fauci says 

Dr. Fauci stated that there was a possibility that the ongoing outbreak of monkeypox might become endemic in the United States, meaning that it could spread without being eradicated.

"That's the reason why we've got to move quickly," he explained.

The US government has been attempting to provide access to vaccines, which are in low supply, making it more difficult for sexual health clinics with inadequate funding to respond to the outbreak.

According to Dr. Fauci, vaccines must be administered to those at risk of infection, such as those on the HIV preventive therapy PrEP.

"We want to get a much broader coverage of vaccine for pre-exposure prophylaxis as well as for post-exposure prophylaxis," he said.
