Tuesday, French police were searching for a man suspected of murdering two instructors in a small community in the Pyrenees, a crime possibly motivated by envy.
According to prosecutors, a man and a woman who taught at a school in the nearby southern city of Tarbes were discovered dead in the village of Pouyastruc on Monday afternoon.
The suspect has "eluded capture," Tarbes prosecutor Pierre Aurignac told AFP, adding that a double murder probe has been initiated.
According to an unnamed person close to the investigation, the crime may have been motivated by a romantic rivalry. The unidentified suspect in his 30s is the woman's previous lover.
He is suspected of riding a motorcycle into the village with the intent to murder the pair. The 32-year-old woman was discovered by neighbors on the road, while the 55-year-old male was found in his home just meters away.
Visiting a school west of Paris, French Education Minister Pap Ndiaye described the situation as "terrible." I my condolences to everyone who knew the deceased.
Approximately sixty members of the security forces have been mobilized, according to the police.
Parents and students at the Desaix middle school in Tarbes, where teachers taught physical education and French, have received psychological support.
