Elvis has beaten "Top Gun: Maverick" in the box office dance-off. After both films reported similar ticket sales on Sunday, "Elvis" dominated the weekend based on Monday's final figures.
According to Monday's official estimates from Warner Bros., "Elvis" grossed $31.1 million from Friday to Sunday, somewhat more than the $30.5 million the studio predicted on Sunday. When film studios report box office on Sunday, they can estimate Sunday's ticket sales reasonably.
In contrast, Paramount Pictures overestimated "Top Gun: Maverick's" performance in its sixth weekend. After reporting the same $30.5 million for the sequel to "Top Gun" on Sunday, the studio's final figure was $29.6 million.
Regardless, both films were successful. The Elvis Presley biography by Baz Luhrmann debuted above expectations and attracted big numbers of elderly viewers, a demographic that has been sluggish to return to theaters during the pandemic.
In its sixth weekend, "Top Gun: Maverick" continued to hold remarkably well, with a 34% drop in box office receipts. The film starring Tom Cruise and directed by Joseph Kosinski has grossed around $1 billion worldwide and over $520 million domestically.
