A 14-year-old girl was killed, and eight others were injured in a shooting at a strip mall northwest of the city center of Phoenix, Arizona.
Sergeant Andy Williams informed reporters that nine people were rushed to the hospital after a shooting drove people fleeing near 10th Avenue and Hatcher Road at 1:00 a.m. on Saturday (9:00 a.m. GMT).
The 14-year-old girl died in the hospital, two women sustained life-threatening injuries, and six others sustained non-life-threatening injuries.
Mr. Williams stated in an interview carried out by ABC 15 that no suspects were immediately identified, and no arrests were made while investigators compiled witness testimony.
He stated that it looked a firearm was used after an altercation broke out among those gathering for "some kind of party."
"Numerous rounds were fired into this crowd as everyone fled the area," he continued.
Mr. Williams stated that the injured ranged in age between 17 and 24.
About an hour earlier, authorities had reported that a teenager had been shot and murdered outside his home three blocks away.
It was initially unclear whether the two shootings were connected.
Phoenix Mayor Kate Gallego commented on the shooting on Twitter, stating, "It seems like another mass shooting occurs every day." "Time has expired," she said, and change must occur immediately.
