On Sunday, officials reported that a significant fire engulfed an inland container warehouse in southeast Bangladesh, killing at least five people and wounding more than 100.
Officials said that a fire broke out at a container complex in Sitakundu, 40 kilometers (25 miles) from the port city of Chittagong, on Saturday night, causing many container explosions after a massive explosion.
Sunday morning, fire department officer Faruk Hossain Shikder reported that firefighters were still putting out the blaze. According to neighborhood residents, the explosion shook the area and smashed the windows of surrounding homes.
According to Chittagong civil surgeon Mohammed Elias Hossain, the death toll could grow as some injured are in serious condition. He stated that among the wounded were both firefighters and police officers.
He encouraged all doctors in the district to assist in dealing with the issue and requested urgent blood donations.
The origin of the fire was not immediately apparent. Officials from the fire department have speculated that the blaze may have originated from a container of hydrogen peroxide and rapidly spread to additional containers.
In 2020, three persons were killed when an oil tank exploded in the Patenga neighborhood of Chittagong's container terminal.
