US Vice President Joe Biden will have a virtual summit with Japan, Australia, and India on Thursday, New Delhi said.

India's foreign ministry issued the statement a day after Prime Minister Narendra Modi spoke with Russian President Vladimir Putin for the second time since Moscow invaded Ukraine last week.

The US has urged Delhi to utilize its "leverage" in Moscow.

The Indian statement did not refer to the Ukraine issue, instead stating that Biden, Modi, Fumio Kishida, and Scott Morrison would "exchange views and assessments on significant Indo-Pacific developments."

The alliance is viewed as a deterrent to China, and there have been concerns in India and elsewhere that the Ukraine crisis would divert Washington's attention away from the area.

Additionally, the meeting could provide an opportunity for other leaders to encourage Modi to adopt a more critical stance toward Russia's invasion of Ukraine.

India, which supported the Soviet Union during the Cold War and has close ties with Moscow, has urged Russia and Ukraine to halt hostilities but refrained from denouncing the incursion.

On Wednesday, it again abstained from voting on a United Nations resolution condemning Russia's activities.

According to the brief announcement, the four leaders would "review ongoing efforts to implement Leaders' initiatives announced as part of the Quad's contemporary and positive agenda."
