On Friday, two Canadians were fatally murdered, and another was wounded at a hotel in Playa del Carmen, Mexico.
According to Quintana Roo state security commissioner Lucio Hernández, the violence began due to an "argument between hotel guests."
Citing Canadian officials, he stated that both the gunman and the two victims of the Hotel Xcaret incident had prior convictions for robbery, drug, and weapons charges.
In a subsequent tweet, Mr. Hernández also pleaded for information about the gunman, who was wearing a light gray hoodie and trousers. On his profile, the security head also released a CCTV image of the gunman, a hotel guest.
The event was captured on film and has since gone viral. It depicts the victims' bodies on the floor of the hotel's restaurant.
The three unidentified victims were transported to a hospital, where two of them later died.
Global Affairs Canada stated that they were aware of allegations of Canadian citizens being impacted by "a Mexican incident."
Recently, the country has recorded an alarming frequency of similar attacks.
Earlier this week, two ladies from Texas were discovered tortured, shot, mutilated, and abandoned in Mexico on the side of a road. 28-year-old Mexican citizens Nohem Medina Martnez and Yulizsa Ramrez were assassinated while visiting family in Ciudad Juárez.
Another incident occurred this week when a Mexican photojournalist was shot in the head outside his home in Tijuana, the northern border city.
According to some sources, the incident was tied to drug violence along Mexico's popular Mayan Riviera tourism corridor. Two alleged drug dealers were killed in a gunfight on the beach of Puerto Morelos in November, and two Indian and German tourists were killed in crossfire during an alleged drug fight in October.
