Prince Harry stated on Tuesday that the name "Megxit," which the British press used to refer to his and his wife Meghan's decision to resign from their royal duties, was a sexist term.
Harry spoke via video on a panel titled The Internet Lie Machine, organized by Wired, a leading technology and culture publication in the United States.
He stated that the term exemplified online and media hate.
"Perhaps people are aware of this, and perhaps they are not, but the term Megxit was and continues to be a sexist slur.
"It was created by a troll, amplified by royal correspondents, and it grew and grew into mainstream media." However, it all began with a troll,' Harry explained. He made no further explanations.
Harry and Meghan, formally known as the Duke and Duchess of Sussex, relocated to California last year to pursue a more self-sufficient lifestyle.
Harry has stated that part of their leave was the British tabloid media's treatment of Meghan, whose mother is Black and her father is white.
According to a report published in October by social media analytics company Bot Sentinel, 83 Twitter accounts were responsible for 70% of the hostile speech and misinformation directed towards Meghan and Harry.
In response to the study, Harry stated on Tuesday that "perhaps the most disturbing aspect of this was the number of British journalists who interacted with them and amplified the lies." However, they regurgitate these fabrications as fact."
Harry and Meghan have since launched a campaign against the hostility on social media, which they claim is damaging people's mental health.
Harry described misinformation as a "global humanitarian crisis." on Tuesday.
About his mother, Princess Diana, who died in a car collision in Paris while being pursued by reporters, Harry added: "I am all too familiar with the tragedy.
"I lost my mother to this self-manufactured rabidness, and obviously I'm determined not to lose the mother to my children to the same thing."
