Donald Trump's defense team wrapped up the case against the conviction of the former US president at the Senate impeachment trial on Friday.
The defense team denied Trump being responsible to incite the insurrection at the US capitol on January 6.
The defense team concluded its case in a little over three hours. Followed by that was a Question-Answer session. Senators questioned House impeachment managers and Trump's defense lawyers.
The verdict could come as soon as Saturday if neither side calls any witnesses.
Former President Donald Trump has been impeached by the house on January 13, following the riot at the US capitol on January 6 in which five people died.
Trump's lawyers insisted Trump not being responsible for the riot.
Michael van der Veen, a Trump defendant said that the impeachment case is a "politically motivated witch hunt," he also claimed that the case is "completely divorced from the facts, the evidence and the interests of the American people." He called the case a monstrous lie.
"To claim that the president in any way wished, desired, or encouraged lawless or violent behavior is a preposterous and monstrous lie," he said.
He also said the former president could not have incited something that was already planned.
Bruce Castor, another defense lawyer told the senators, "clearly, there was no insurrection."
Trump's lawyer accused the president's words have been taken out of context. They also said it is hypocritical of democrats to be praising the Black Lives Matter Protests in 2020 and to impeach the president for inciting the one at the US Capitol.
Both the side will have opportunity to call on witnesses on Saturday but neither is expected to do so.
House impeachment and managers will have time to present the closing arguments up to two hours each. Then the Senate will vote to convict or acquit the former president on the incitement of insurrection.
It will require a supermajority to impeach Trump, which seems very unlikely, until and unless the trials by the impeachment managers changed their mind drastically.
