According to local authorities, two people were killed during a shooting at a Boise, Idaho mall, and four others were injured, including a police officer. A brief shootout occurred with the suspect before they were apprehended.

Officers were dispatched to the Boise Towne Square Mall after reports of gunshots. During a press conference just before 2 p.m. local time on Monday, Boise Police Chief Ryan Lee stated that two people were killed and four others were injured, including one officer.

Officers saw a person matching the suspect's description shortly after arriving at the mall, Lee said, adding that "there was an exchange of gunfire" before the suspect was struck and taken into custody. They were later described as being in "critical condition," though the severity of their injuries is still unknown.

Images of a big police response outside the mall and footage purporting to catch the sounds of guns fired during the event surfaced online.

Lee said the suspect, who has not been identified, acted alone and that there is "no ongoing threat or danger to the community at large" following a thorough search of the mall and its 150-plus businesses.

While the Boise Police Department will lead the investigation, the Ada County Critical Incident Task Force will look into the officer-involved shooting component of the incident, according to the police chief. He said it was "entirely too premature to make any of those assumptions" to speculate on what might have prompted the attack.
