Nigerian police officers fired tear gas canisters at protestors in Abuja on Friday morning.
The police stormed the area and fired tear gas canisters to put down the October 1 protest on Airport Road in the Federal Capital Territory.
The protest began early Friday morning and was going well, with the protestors, mostly youngsters, demanding that President Muhammadu Buhari step down and a revolution be called.
Nigeria's Independence Day is the same as the #RevolutionNow and #BuhariMustGo protests in Abuja.
The demonstrators were spotted chanting and holding banners and posters that said 'Buhari Must Go.'
Nigeria will celebrate its 61st anniversary of independence on October 1 this year.
Omoyele Sowore, a human rights campaigner, called on Nigerians to rally across the country on Independence Day to reject President Muhammadu Buhari.
The activist responded to a statement issued on Thursday by presidential adviser Femi Adesina, headed 'October Independence Anniversary: President Buhari to Broadcast to the Nation.'
"I am urging all Nigerian citizens and non-citizens to boycott @MBuhari's national "INDEPENDENCE DAY" broadcast scheduled for tomorrow, instead participating in protests across the country to reject this man, the Federal Republic's Failure-In-Chief #BuhariMustGo," he said on Twitter.
The activist said on Facebook, "What is this country's failure-in-chief going to broadcast? #BuhariMustGo #RevolutionNow #October1stProtest"
