Egypt shut down the Rafah border crossing in the southern Gaza Strip on Monday, escalating tensions with Gaza's Hamas rulers.
According to the Associated Press, this is the first time the crossing has been closed during the workday since early 2021. It is unclear how long the closure will be in effect.
According to the report, Egyptian officials stated that the closure was related to Egypt's efforts to broker a long-term ceasefire between Israel and Hamas.
However, as Israel's Kan news reported on Sunday night, Cairo is also enraged at Hamas for the Saturday riot at the Gaza-Israel border.
