Thousands of Shia Muslims attended a procession marking the ninth of Muharram in Karachi on Wednesday.

Many processions are traditionally held during the month of Muharram, marking the martyrdom of the grandson of the Prophet Muhammad, Hazrat Imam Hussain, in 680 AD. Muharram is also the first month of the Islamic calendar.

"We Shias are peaceful and good citizens; this is our message for all to participate in these processions for Imam Hussain because Imam Hussain was not only a leader for Shias but for all Muslims," commented Shahzawar Hussain, a mourner attending the procession.

Authorities have declared the ninth and tenth of Muharram (August 18 and 19) public holidays.

Israeli and US flags were set on fire by protesters attending the procession acting out of spite.

Heavy police presence was visible throughout the route of the procession to ensure the safety of mourners.
