In a village in northern Burkina Faso, at least 100 people were slaughtered by gunmen, who the government says were jihadists.

The incident took place on Friday evening in Solhan village in the country's  Sahel's Yaga province.

The government spokesperson said the local market and several homes also were burned down in the area towards the border with Niger. The president of Burkina Faso Roch Marc Christian Kabore condemned the attack saying it "barbaric".

No group has yet claimed responsibility for the attack.

There are more than 5,000 French troops in the Sahel region, which has not impacted the violence which is increasing in the region.

More than a million people have been internally displaced in the region.

A couple of months ago in April, more than 50 people were killed in the former French colony within a week.
