In an assassination attempt, gunmen attacked and wounded Uganda's former army chief, killing his daughter and driver.
On Tuesday in the Kampala neighborhood of Kiasasi, four attackers on motorbikes opened fire on a vehicle carrying General Katumba Wamala, the minister of works and transport, according to local television station NBS.
“He was involved in a shooting... His driver was slain, and he was hurt and taken to the hospital,” army spokeswoman Brigadier Flavia Byekwaso said.
NBS stated that Wamala's daughter, who was in the vehicle with him, was also slain.
Katumba was seen in apparent difficulty outside an SUV, his light-colored trousers splashed with blood, according to images circulating on social media.
Bullet holes in a car window and casings on the ground were also visible in social media photographs.
In recent years, several high-profile figures have been assassinated or mysteriously killed in the East African country, fueling suspicions about the culprits and their motives.
A politician, a senior police officer, the country's chief public prosecutor, senior Muslim leaders, and others have been among the victims.
The assassination attempt on Katumba took place in the same capital suburb where assailants on motorbikes shot a van carrying a top police official in 2017.
Felix Kaweesa, a police officer, was killed along with his bodyguard and driver.
