According to Florida police, a 3-year-old boy discovered a pistol inside a couch and shot a 2-year-old girl in the house late Saturday night when three adults were watching basketball.

Polk County Sheriff Grady Judd said Saturday that the boy ran screaming from the bed, and the adults drove her to the hospital, crashing their car on the way.

“It cannot be emphasized enough that if you have weapons in your house, keep them out of the reach of children,” Judd said in a statement.

He went on to say, "A beautiful little girl is fighting for her life right now because another kid who didn't know any better was able to get his hands on a loaded gun."

When Lakeland Police arrived at the scene of a two-car collision, they discovered one of the vehicles was on its way to the hospital with the shooting victim. According to cops, the boy was taken to the hospital by a good Samaritan.

According to police, the little girl was shot once in the chest and suffered serious damage to her internal organs. During a press conference on Saturday, a sheriff said she was still in "very serious" but stable condition.
