Prosecutors in Fulton County, Georgia have opened up the investigation against former president Trump for his attempts to overturn the 2020 election results.

The district attorney of Georgia's largest county has opened the investigation against then-president Donald Trump over the January phone call in which the Trump pressurized the Georgia secretary of state to “find” votes for him.

"I just want to find 11,780 votes, which is one more than we have," Trump told the Georgia Secretary of State, Brad Raffensperger, days before Congress certified his loss.

Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis sent a letter Wednesday asking several state officials, including Raffensperger and Gov. Brian Kemp, to preserve documents related to Trump's call to Raffensperger on Jan. 2.

The letter, first seen to be reported by the New York Times, does not mention Trump by his name. But it says protestors are planning for potential criminal charges against the people who attempted to overturn the election results.

This investigation includes, but is not limited to, potential violations of Georgia law prohibiting the solicitation of election fraud, the making of false statements to state and local governmental bodies, conspiracy, racketeering, violation of oath of office, and any involvement in violence or threats related to the election’s administration,” the letter says.\

In January Trump had called the Georgia secretary of the state, a Republican, insisting he won the election. He asked the Secretary of the State of Georgia to find 11,780 votes for him.

Donald Trump is currently facing an impeachment trial at the US Senate for the incitement of the insurrection at the Capitol.
