The Supreme Court of the United States ruled on Friday that the state of California can no longer continue with the ban on indoor church services amidst the pandemic.

The ruling on Friday said that the state can no longer continue with the ban on in-person services. However, it can still limit the attendance to 25%. The court said that the ban on in-person services affects the constitutional right to the free exercise of religion.

Churches had argued that the state of California violated their constitutional liberty when they enforced the ban on in-person worshipping and limited the number of people who could attend the church.

Chief Justice of the Supreme court wrote that the federal courts owe some sort of deference to the state governments but this time the deference went too far. He wrote, "The State has concluded, for example, that singing indoors poses a heightened risk of transmitting COVID–19. I see no basis in this record for overriding that aspect of the state public health framework."

He added, "At the same time, the State's present determination — that the maximum number of adherents who can safely worship in the most cavernous cathedral is zero — appears to reflect not expertise or discretion, but instead insufficient appreciation or consideration of the interests at stake."
