Inside an Illinois bowling alley, a gunman opened fire, killing three people and injuring three others in what police say was a random attack.
After the shooting at Don Carter Lanes on Saturday night, a 37-year-old male suspect was in custody, Rockford police said in a social media post.
Police Chief Dan O'Shea said during a news conference that two of those who were shot were teenagers.
O'Shea did not disclose further details about the victims immediately. He described the scene as contained and said that while apprehending the alleged gunman, he did not think any officers fired their guns.
Rockford lies roughly 130 kilometers (80 miles) northwest of Chicago.
A statement was issued by Mayor Tom McNamara, stating he was angry and saddened by the shooting.
McNamara said, "My thoughts are with the families of those who lost loved ones. I'm still thinking of those who have been wounded and my hopes for fast and complete recovery are with them."
According to records that date back to 1965, the Rockford Register Star announced that 2020 was the city's deadliest year for homicides. This year, thirty-five people in the city were killed, smashing the previous record of 31 in 1996.
