Amazon stated on Wednesday that it would eliminate more than 18,000 positions, blaming "the uncertain economy" and the fact that it "hired rapidly" during the pandemic.

"Between the reductions we made in November and the ones we're sharing today, we plan to eliminate just over 18,000 roles," said CEO Andy Jassy in a statement to employees. In November, the corporation announced 10,000 layoffs.

Jassey stated that the company's leadership was "fully aware that these role eliminations are challenging for individuals, and we do not make these decisions lightly.

"We are working to support those affected and are providing packages that include a separation payment, transitional health insurance benefits, and external job placement support," he explained.

Some of the job cuts would occur in Europe. Jassey stated that the affected employees would be notified beginning January 18.

He stated that the abrupt revelation was made "because one of our teammates leaked this information externally."

Jassy stated, "Amazon has weathered uncertain and difficult economies in the past, and we will continue to do so,"

During the pandemic, the store doubled its global workforce between the beginning of 2020 and 2022 to match an upsurge in demand for delivery services.

At the end of September, the business had 1.54 million employees worldwide, excluding seasonal workers employed during periods of high activity, such as the Christmas season.
