According to Taliban sources, a magnitude 6.1 earthquake in eastern Afghanistan has killed at least 1,000 people, and the death toll is expected to rise as information trickles in from isolated communities.

The earthquake has reportedly injured 1,500 more individuals.

Officials in Afghanistan have asked humanitarian organizations to assist in the rescue operation while teams are being sent to quake-affected districts.

A Taliban, foreign ministry spokesman stated that the Taliban would welcome international assistance.

Pakistan has stated that it is working to assist.

The majority of recorded fatalities occurred in Paktika province, where 100 people were killed, and 610 were injured, according to the head of the Taliban administration's disaster management authority.

He also reported deaths in the eastern regions of Nangarhar and Khost.

The authorities are seeking other victims.

Over 500 kilometers, about 119 million people in Pakistan, Afghanistan, and India felt the earthquake, according to a tweet from the European Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC).

Rescue efforts are ongoing.

According to eyewitnesses who spoke to ABC, the quake struck late at night as people in the war-ravaged country slept.

He stated that the earthquake traumatized Ruh Ullah, a tailor from Paktika province residing in Kabul.

"Ever since I have heard of the devastation back home, I am crying, the mobile phone connections are not properly working and no-one is telling me if my extended family members are alive or not," he said.

His native district of Barmal was one of the worst-affected regions in southeast Afghanistan.

Firdaus Khan, a native of Sharana, the provincial seat of Paktika province, told ABC that earthquake sufferers had inundated the province's only public hospital.

"The majority of victims are women and children because they were sleeping when the disaster struck... There is a severe lack of resources, physicians, and other necessities "he remarked.

People have no idea what to do.

The state-owned Bakhtar news agency reported that rescue activities had been initiated to reduce the likelihood of additional casualties and property destruction.

Since assuming power in Kabul in August 2021, Taliban authorities have not obtained international recognition. They have declared losses in the whole south-eastern area, which includes the provinces of Paktika, Paktia, Logar, Khost, and Logar.

In response to the Taliban's takeover, numerous governments have put sanctions on Afghanistan's banking system and reduced development funding by billions of dollars.

However, humanitarian aid has persisted, and international organizations, such as the United Nations, are operating in the country.

In 2015, an earthquake devastated the remote northeastern region of Afghanistan, killing hundreds of people in Afghanistan and neighboring northern Pakistan.
