A friend of actress Amber Heard testified on Wednesday that she saw the bruises and cuts resulting from Johnny Depp's repeated acts of assault.
Raquel Pennington stated in a recorded deposition played for the jury that she never saw Johnny Depp strike Amber Heard. She claimed to have witnessed the injuries and photographed Heard's face in December 2015, following a dispute wherein Heard claims Depp head-butted her and maybe fractured her nose.
The photograph depicts Heard's face with a bloated nose, a cut lip, and two moderately dark eyes.
She also photographed Heard's hair, which she claimed had been pulled from her head.
In a January 2022 deposition, Pennington stated that Heard "often had to conceal bruises and facial injuries with makeup."
Pennington stated that she no longer considers Heard a friend and that their relationship has deteriorated over the past year.
Depp claims that he never struck Heard and that he was the victim of Heard's abuse.
Depp is suing Heard in Virginia's Fairfax County Circuit Court for libel after an opinion piece she published in The Washington Post in December 2018. She described herself as "a public figure representing domestic abuse." His attorneys claim that the story defamed him despite not mentioning his name. The experiment has been ongoing for five weeks.
The fight in December 2015 is one of several that were contested. While jurors have seen the photographs taken by Pennington documenting Heard's injuries, they have also viewed footage of Heard's appearance on a late-night talk program the following day, during which the injuries were not evident.
Heard stated that the wounds were concealed using cosmetics.
Pennington's evidence follows Heard's conclusion of her time on the witness stand, which included two arduous days of cross-examination during which Depp's attorneys questioned Heard about her allegations of physical and sexual assault.
Pennington's testimony offers corroboration for a number of the claimed assaults. In addition to the December 2015 incident, Pennington stated that she observed cuts on Heard's feet upon returning from a March 2015 vacation to Australia. Heard claimed that Depp sexually attacked her with a bottle of vodka during the trip and that she cut her foot on shattered glass from the assault.
Pennington, who shared a penthouse with Depp and Heard, stated that she was the first person to see Heard during the couple's final battle in May 2016, which led to their divorce.
