Sunday evening, the death toll from an intense explosion at a luxury hotel in Cuba's capital rose to 31 as search crews with dogs combed through the rubble of the historic, 19th-century structure in search of the missing.

The five-star, 96-room Hotel Saratoga in Old Havana was set to reopen after being closed for two years when an apparent gas leak ignited on Friday, blowing the exterior walls into the crowded, midmorning streets just one block from the country's Capitol.

Several surrounding structures were also damaged, including the famous Marti Theater and the denomination's western Cuban headquarters, the Calvary Baptist Church. According to the church's Facebook page, the structure sustained "significant structural damage, with several collapsed or severely damaged walls."
