Violence against women (VAW) and girls is a horrible crime and a public health emergency, according to UN Secretary-General António Guterres.

Guterres stated on Twitter that now is the moment to redouble efforts to completely abolish VAW by 2030.

According to new statistics, two out of every three women in 13 countries reported experiencing some type of violence during the Covid-19 epidemic, according to Guterres.

But, as Guterres emphasized on Twitter and in a video message ahead of the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women, VAW is not unavoidable; it can and must be avoided.

According to a new UN Women research, during the Covid-19 outbreak, women suffered a rise in gender-based violence, frequently in their own homes.

The pandemic's consequences have had a severe influence on gender-based equality aspirations, particularly for women living in conflict-affected areas.
