France and the United Kingdom will present a proposal to an extraordinary United Nations conference on Afghanistan on Monday, suggesting a safe zone in Kabul to safeguard civilians attempting to flee the country, according to French President Emmanuel Macron.

"Our resolution proposal aspires to designate a safe zone in Kabul, under UN authority, that would allow humanitarian operations to continue," Macron said in an interview published on Sunday in the French newspaper Le Journal du Dimanche (JDD).

United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres is calling a meeting on Afghanistan with the United Nations envoys for the United Kingdom, France, the United States, China, and Russia, the Security Council's permanent veto-wielding members.

On Saturday, Macron said France was in preliminary talks with the Taliban regarding the humanitarian situation in Afghanistan and the possibility of more people being evacuated.

President Joe Biden has set a Tuesday deadline for the withdrawal of US military forces that have been guarding Kabul's airport. France is one of the countries that has stopped evacuating people from Kabul airport.
