11,385 feet high volcano is pouring lava in a Congo town

Nyiragongo Volcano, which is  11,385 feet high, is pouring lava towards the remote town of Goma, which is located just 12 miles from the volcano.

The eruption started on Saturday evening. According to the reports, The lava is coming from a lateral fissure on the eastern flank of the volcano.

The magma that supplies the Nyiragongo volcano is said to have low viscosity which lets the lava flow easily reaching speeds of 90 kilometers per hour.

The volcano in the Democratic Republic of Congo's Virunga National Park hosts one of the largest lava lakes on the planet.

Goma is one of the major cities in DRC and hosts more than 670,000 people. The city lies on the edge of Lake Kivu bordering Rwanda.
