The house of representatives passed a bill that seeks to incorporate LGBTQ protections in the US labor and civil rights laws.
The move said to be a “top priority” for the US president Joe Biden faces an uphill battle to go through the 50-50 controlled Senate.
The protections would extend to employment, housing, loan applications, education, public accommodations, and other areas.
The bill known as the equality act was passed by 224-206 votes with three Republicans joining the vote to say yes.
Supporters say that the law would ensure every person would be treated equally.
The law amends the existing US civil rights law to explicitly include sexual orientation and gender identification as protected characteristics.
GOP members have bashed the bill saying it is dangerous and attacks on freedom and religious liberty.
President Joe Biden tweeted following the passing of the Equality Act. Biden tweeted that the passing of equality has made it clear, “Transgender is equal human rights.”
“Now, it’s time for the Senate to do the same.”
