An 18-year-old woman was picked up from a house party at Hughesdale in southeast Melbourne in September.
The uber driver, Hafiz Muhammad Farid Babar requested the woman to do something for him in order to get a cheaper ride, to which the woman protested. After denying his unwanted requests, he forcefully engaged her into a sexual activity. According to the woman, the driver pulled over in the middle of the trip, got into the back seat and digitally raped her as she cried for help. She then fled to a nearby home and knocked on a stranger's door for help.
The 32-year-old uber driver was arrested soon and claimed that he was falsely accused. He eventually pleaded guilty and was sentened to prison for a maximum of five years. He must serve three years before being eligible for release on parole. Babar had come to Australia from Pakistan in 2015 but his student visa was cancelled when he was charged.
The court was told that he had brought shame upon his family. Babar recently expressed his remorse and has developed post traumatic stress and depressive symptoms. The woman gave a statement to the court that she still carries a large emotinal baggage linked to the crime. The judge noted it was an understatement to say the rape had a profound impact on the woman's life.
