The Brazilian city of Manaus has suspended its vaccination campaign for 24 hours for the state of the Amazonas to review its distribution plan.

The suspension “which meets the recommendation of local control bodies, was taken so that the State government presents a reorganized plan for the distribution of doses”, according to a statement published by the city’s administration on Thursday.

In the first two days of the vaccination program which commenced on Tuesday, 1,140 health professionals were jabbed with the first dose of CoronaVac in Manaus. On the same day, more Brazilian states dispensed their first doses of the vaccine from China’s Sinovac after it was approved on Sunday for emergency use. Brazil also approved Britain’s AstraZeneca vaccine.

However, the capital and largest city of the Amazonas state received enough shots to cover only 34 percent of 56,000 health professionals.

“With the low volume of doses of vaccines against Covid-19 passed by the State government to the Manaus City Hall – only 40,072 of the 282,000 received from the Ministry of Health,” the municipality needed to review its inoculation plan, according to another statement from the city’s administration.

The country has reported more than 214,000 deaths due to the COVID-19 pandemic, second only to the United States, while almost 8.7 million people have been infected so far, according to the Johns Hopkins University.
