Succession is the tale of a dysfunctional family vying for wealth and power and a feel-good comedy. The Emmy awards were won by Ted Lasso, while South Korean actor Lee Jung-jae was chosen as best actor for his performance in the dystopian thriller Squid Game, a first for a non-English-speaking performer.

Both Succession and Ted Lasso have previously been honored, with Succession receiving the award for outstanding drama series in 2020 before the COVID-19 pandemic interrupted its production.

Lee earned the award for an outstanding actor for his performance in Squid Game, a Netflix series about cash-strapped players risking their lives for a fortune that became a global phenomenon after its premiere. Hwang Dong-hyuk, the director of the show, also won the award for best director.

In addition to Lee, numerous other artists earned their first Emmy, including the singer Lizzo for her series Lizzo's Watch Out for the Big Grrrls and Sheryl Lee Ralph for her role in Abbott Elementary.

Zendaya won her second Emmy for the adolescent coming-of-age series Euphoria.

After receiving her prize, Zendaya said, "Thank you for creating such a safe environment for me to perform this very difficult show."

"My greatest hope with "Euphoria" was that it would aid in the healing of individuals. Thank you to everybody who has shared their stories with me. Zendaya stated, "I carry them with me, and my character, Rue, carries them with her as well."

Ted Lasso, which follows the ups and downs of a London football team and their American manager, won best comedy series for the second consecutive year, and Jason Sudeikis and Brett Goldstein won best comedy actor and supporting actor for the second time each.

The White Lotus, a parody about wealthy tourists and the workers who cater to them at a posh resort, won the award for best-limited series, and Murray Bartlett and Jennifer Coolidge won the prizes for best-supporting actor and actress, respectively.

Coolidge amused the Emmy audience by shimmying to the music that was meant to interrupt her acceptance speech.

The glitzy dinner marked a return to normalcy in Hollywood after the coronavirus curtailed or canceled events in recent years.
