The Houston police have started an investigation to look into the tragic death of a teenager who was reportedly shot by accident as her brother was showing off his new firearm.
A 19 years old student from Houston, Texas, Laura Natalya Rodriguez died on the spot at her home after her 18 years old brother’s gun accidentally went off and shot her in the neck.
Officers from the Houston P.D. said that investigators believe it to be a tragic accident as the weapon went off while her younger brother was showing it off.
'It's a tragic situation for the entire family, and our thoughts and prayers are with them,' a police officer expressed his grief at the briefing.
Her parents are said to be home during the time of the accident. Right after the mishap, her older sibling tried to resuscitate her via CPR and called 911 afterward.
The teenager was a senior at Syracuse University and was home because of the pandemic.
Meanwhile, the family has launched a gofundme campaign of $10000 to cover her funeral expenses. The family described Ms. Rodriguez as a whimsical teen who loved Disney world, to have fun and laugh. Syracuse University also issued an official statement lamenting the loss of an “outstanding student" and said her to be the first person in her family to attend college.
